"Chili for Change" Fundraiser a Success!
05.04.06 – Sunday’s “Chili for
Change” fundraiser in support of Kathy Reiner Martin’s
campaign for the Baltimore County Council 5th District seat brought a
strong crowd to Camp Chapel United Methodist Church in Perry Hall.
Volunteers from Friends of Kathy Reiner Martin were on hand to serve
chili, hand out buttons, sell t-shirts and mingle with supporters.
Mary Smith, who works with Kathy on Camp Chapel’s outreach team,
remarked that Kathy has “empowered so many people to do things
they wouldn’t otherwise do.”
Mary added that, though she doesn’t usually get involved in
political campaigns, she thinks “Kathy would be the voice that
this part of Baltimore County needs.”
As people went up for seconds of the chili and homemade brownies, Kathy
talked a bit about problems facing the district, like school
overcrowding, and emphasized the need to think out of the box on these
issues.
“There are some creative ways that we can address our problems
and that's what we should be talking about,” she said. (Read more about Kathy’s proposals to fix school overcrowding.)
She also talked about the need to reach out to people who don’t
usually get involved in politics or even community activities.
”I want to talk to people who don't usually have a voice,”
she said. “You can hold a town meeting and get to talk to people
who are really angry about something, but what about the people who
don’t come. We need to find them and talk to them too.”
Kathy is committed to bringing everyone in the 5th district to the
table to sculpt a vision for their communities and to helping them work
together toward that shared vision. If you want to join the push for
change, sign up to volunteer.
