Solutions to School Overcrowding
Kathy has positive proposals to fix school overcrowding:
1. Increase Parallel Enrollment at Our Community Colleges
Direct Benefits:
- Solution to school overcrowding that can start now!
Indirect Benefits:
- Great educational opportunities outside the classroom
- Guaranteed college credit that transfers to four-year Universities
- Reduce the cost of college when tuitions are skyrocketing
- Students stay connected to their High School and community
Reducing school overcrowding can start now under existing programs.
The cost of expanding the Parallel Enrollment Program is
minimal. The cost for 100 students to take two classes at CCBC is
under $70,000 for tuition, books and fees; far less than building more
classrooms and hiring more teachers.
There are currently 1,000 students in this program, with room for 1,000 more.
You can find additional information about this program at: http://www.ccbcmd.edu/admissions/pep.html
2. Increase Internship Programs with Our Local Businesses
Direct benefits:
- Solution to school overcrowding that can start now!
Indirect Benefits:
- Great educational opportunities outside the standard classroom
- Great on your resume
- Provides a stronger connection between business and schools
- Students stay connected to their High School and community
The
internship program can be expanded within the current business
curriculum. There are already ‘School to Career’
coordinators on the job who are eager to involve more students in this
highly successful endeavor.
Kathy has been actively promoting this program to area entrepreneurs
and their leaders through the Chambers of Commerce and community
business associations. The feedback has been tremendously positive.
The costs to expand the internship program are minimal since the
infrastructure for the program already exists and is working very well.
